Australian medical coding is a standardized system that converts
medical diagnoses, procedures, and health information into
alphanumeric codes. This supports healthcare funding, statistical analysis,
and research, enabling informed decision-making and improved healthcare outcomes.
The coding framework is comprehensive and consists of three integrated volumes,
collectively known as ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS.
Medical Coding Curriculum
01
ICD-10-AM (Australian Modification)
This component is the adaptation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) ICD-10.
It is used exclusively to classify diagnoses and diseases.
Purpose: To classify all morbidity (disease) data, symptoms, and external causes
of injury or poisoning.
02
ACHI (Australian Classification of Health Interventions)
This is the procedural classification component, which is unique to
the Australian system and its international counterparts.
Purpose: To classify all medical, surgical, diagnostic, and allied
health interventions and procedures performed on a patient.
03
ACS (Australian Coding Standards)
The ACS is arguably the most vital component, as it dictates
how the coders must interpret clinical records and apply the codes from the ICD-10-AM and ACHI volumes.
Purpose: To ensure national consistency and accuracy in the assignment, sequencing, and selection of codes.
